Emergency Planning Before Surgery in Colombia

The useful question is not whether a facility has a badge. It is what actually happens if your case needs escalation.

This is a planning checklist, not medical advice. Emergency capability depends on the procedure, patient, facility and local system. Ask the treating team what applies to your case.

Questions to ask before you book

Ask who is responsible for urgent decisions after hours, whether the procedure is performed in a facility with the level of backup your case may require, and what the transfer plan is if care has to be escalated.

Facility capability matters more than a logo

Accreditation can be one data point, but it does not tell you whether a specific operating room has the specialty support, blood-bank access, imaging, ICU coverage or transfer arrangements relevant to your procedure. Ask provider-level questions.

Know the escalation chain

Before travel, write down the clinic/hospital contact, surgeon contact, after-hours number, nearest appropriate emergency facility and who your companion should call if you cannot communicate yourself.

Plan the post-discharge window

Leaving the hospital is not the same as being ready to fly. Ask what symptoms require urgent evaluation, where you should go locally, and how the Colombian team will communicate with clinicians after you return home.

Keep a portable record

Before leaving Colombia, ask for the operative note, discharge summary, medication list, implant/device details when relevant, pathology information, and a clear follow-up plan.

Next step: compare the actual provider and facility plan, not just a country-level safety claim. Request provider options or return to Start Here.
